Although Picasso was keen to date his works, he never gave them titles. The titles given on the labels are for ease of reference only and are not authoritative in their interpretation.

In some places, we have had to resort to Spanish terms.

Afición (s-e a los toros) refers to a liking for bullfighting, and aficionado refers to a bullfighting enthusiast or connoisseur.

alguazil: from the Spanish alguacil (officer of justice) is the person in charge of enforcing bullfighting regulations.

barrera: first row of bleachers in a bullring.

cartel: poster announcing a bullfight; the word also designates the star-studded line-up of men and beasts taking part.

castoreño: picador’s hat, usually made of beaver felt.

cuadrilla: team of bullfighters under the orders of the matador who face the bull on foot or on horseback.

espada (in Spanish, masc. or fem., even if designating a man): synonym for matador.

lidia: to fight.

montera: bullfighter’s headdress.

paseo: in a bullfight, the inaugural parade of the actors.

rejoneador/a: one who fights the bull on horseback with a rejón (lance).

suerte: lit. “luck” or “fate”. In bullfighting, the word applies to each phase of the bullfight.

toreo: art of bullfighting.

toro: Spanish spelling for fighting bull, the word torero (feminine torera) is applied to all those – picadors, matadors, underlings – who face the animal in the ring.
