Although Picasso was keen to date his works, he never gave them titles. The titles given on the labels are for ease of reference only, and do not constitute an authoritative interpretation.

In some places, we’ve had to resort to Spanish terms.

afición (s-e a los toros) refers to a taste for bullfighting, and “aficionado” to a bullfighting enthusiast or connoisseur.

alguazil: from the Spanish alguacil (officer of justice) is the person in charge of enforcing bullfighting regulations.

barrera: first row of bleachers in a bullring.

cartel: poster announcing a bullfight; the word also designates the star-studded line-up of men and beasts taking part.

castoreño: picador’s hat, usually made of beaver felt.

cuadrilla: team of bullfighters under the orders of the matador who confront the bull on foot or on horseback.

espada (in Spanish, masc. or fem., even if designating a man): synonym for matador.

lidia: to fight.

montera: bullfighter’s headdress.

paseo: in a bullfight, the inaugural parade of the actors.

rejoneador/a: one who fights the bull on horseback with a rejón (lance).

suerte: lit. “chance” or “fate”. In bullfighting, the word applies to each phase of the bullfight.

toreo: art of bullfighting.

torero (feminine torera): the word is applied to all those – picadors, matadors, subordinates – who face the animal in the ring.

toro: Spanish spelling for fighting bull.

Picasso legte zwar Wert darauf, seine Werke zu datieren, gab ihnen aber keine Titel. Die auf den Karten angegebenen Titel dienen der Übersichtlichkeit und sind nicht maßgeblich für ihre Interpretation.

An einigen Stellen mussten wir auf spanische Begriffe zurückgreifen.

Die afición (s-e a los toros) bezeichnet die Vorliebe für Stierrennen und das Wort „aficionado“ den Liebhaber und Kenner des Stierkampfs.

alguazil: vom spanischen alguacil (Justizbeamter) ist derjenige/diejenige, der/die während des Stierkampfes für die Einhaltung der Regeln der Arena verantwortlich ist.

barrera: erste Reihe der Sitzreihen in einer Arena.

cartel: Plakat, das einen Stierkampf ankündigt; das Wort bezeichnet auch das Staraufgebot an Männern und Tieren, die an dem Stierkampf teilnehmen.

castoreño: Hut des Picadors, meist aus Biberfilz.

cuadrilla: Ein Team von Stierkämpfern unter dem Befehl des Matadors, das zu Fuß oder zu Pferd gegen den Stier antritt.

espada (in Spanisch masc. oder fem., auch wenn es einen Mann bezeichnet): Synonym für matador.

lidia: Kampf.

montera: Kopfbedeckung des Toreros.

paseo: bei einem Stierkampf der Eröffnungsumzug der Akteure.

rejoneador/a: Derjenige, der den Stier zu Pferd mit einem rejón (Speer) bekämpft.

suerte: wörtlich „Glück“ oder „Schicksal“. Im Stierkampf bezieht sich das Wort auf jede Phase des Stierkampfs.

toreo: Die Kunst des Toreros.

torero (weiblich torera): Das Wort wird auf alle Personen – Picadore, Matadore, Untergebene – angewandt, die gegen das Tier in der Manege antreten.

toro: spanische Schreibweise für den Kampfstier.

Aunque a Picasso le gustaba fechar sus obras, no les puso títulos. Los títulos que figuran en las etiquetas se han atribuido para facilitar la consulta, pero no constituyen una autoridad en cuanto a su interpretación.

En algunos lugares hemos tenido que utilizar términos españoles.

Afición (s-e a los toros) se refiere a la afición a los toros y la palabra «aficionado» se refiere a un aficionado o conocedor de la tauromaquia.

alguazil: del español alguacil (oficial de justicia) es la persona encargada de hacer cumplir las normas de la plaza durante la corrida.

barrera: primera fila de gradas de una plaza de toros.

cartel: cartel que anuncia una corrida de toros; la palabra también se refiere al cartel de figuras masculinas y femeninas que participan.

castoreño: sombrero del picador, normalmente de fieltro de castor.

cuadrilla: equipo de toreros a las órdenes del matador que lidian al toro a pie o a caballo.

espada: sinónimo de matador.

lidia: combate.

montera: tocado del torero.

paseo: en una corrida de toros, procesión inaugural de los actores.

rejoneador: persona que torea al toro a caballo con un rejón.

suerte: literalmente «suerte» o «destino». En tauromaquia, la palabra se aplica a cada fase de la corrida.

toreo: arte de torear.

torero (femenino torera): la palabra se aplica a todos aquellos – picadores, matadores, subalternos – que se enfrentan al animal en el ruedo.

toro: toro de lidia.
